To anyone visiting Liverpool for the first time, evidence of the ‘wicked’ sense of humour of its inhabitants is immediately evident. The city seems full of people always ready with a witty retort and the ability to make the most of any opportunity that comes their way to demonstrate their natural wit.
Liverpool's Talent
There has always been an affinity between sportsmen and entertainers particularly comedians. The great football clubs of Liverpool and Everton over the years have been likened to Schools of Science! If that is the case, the clubs and theatres of this most vibrant of cities can surely be classed as the University Campus of Comedy.
For sure many comedy greats have graduated with hours from this background.
Sean feels that his comedic background has been a great grounding for radio: "You just couldn't script some of the things listeners come up with when they ring in!" He says comedy has been a part of his life for as long as he can remember. He reckons his first audience was probably at the doctor's office when he did 'the twist' in the waiting room. This continued through his schooldays when he'd entertain classmates with impressions of teachers.
Sean's passions in life are varied: "I hate spiders, I love chocolate ice cream, red shoes and Everton FC.
"I love reading, but not fiction. I once tried to read 'The Thirty Nine Steps' but got fed up after the first two flights!"
Some of its most famous graduates such as Ted Ray - Arthur Askey - Jimmy Tarbuck and perhaps the greatest of them all, the ‘Don’ of comedy, the unique Ken Dodd, have over the years become national comedy icons.
Join in the fun and laughter with comedian Sean Styles weekday mornings on BBC Radio Merseyside from 10am – 12pm.
